MAGA is Not a Movement. It's a Cult: The 5 Tactics That Define MAGA.
The American Cult: How Trumpism Mirrors Classic Cult Behavior: Signs of Coercive Control in the MAGA Political Movement
Cults are defined by psychological manipulation, identity transformation, and emotional control. Cults operate by creating/enforcing an unbreakable loyalty to a leader (often one who lies, cheats, and manipulates via coercive control) or a cause.
5 Cult Tactics That Prove MAGA is a Cult:
Unquestioning Loyalty to a Leader: MAGA supporters often display unwavering devotion to their cult leader (Donald Trump), viewing him as an infallible and chosen leader (many even placing him above Jesus, whom many of them also claim to serve). They trust him more than family, friends, or religious leaders, and view his transgressions as proof of his strength.
Us-vs.-Them Mentality (and Demonization of Opponents): The movement promotes a binary worldview, where supporters are portrayed as 'true patriots' (or 'God's chosen people') and others are labeled as enemies (or evil sinners). This divisive mentality justifies hostility toward outsiders, including the media, political opponents, and even former friends, family, and allies who have been deemed disloyal by their cult leader (Donald Trump).
Rejection of Critical Thinking and External Facts: MAGA members often dismiss fundamental truths, evidence-based information, scientific consensus, and legal proceedings that contradict their cult leader's (Trump's) claims. They rely on his statements as the ultimate truth, even when they contradict observable reality or go against their own interests.
The Cult Leader Has Unquestionable Authority: As a cult leader, Trump demands total loyalty of his followers, and his cult will kick out anyone who shows independence, calls out, or disagrees with the cult leader. Additionally, Trump's most loyal followers accept his authority without question, mirroring cult dynamics (where the leader's word is final and dissent is not tolerated).
Emotional Control and Perceived Victumhood and Persecution: The MAGA movement thrives on a sense of shared grievance and victimhood. Trump supporters are fueled by anger and a belief that they are under attack, which strengthens their bond to one another and their leader (who promises retribution and salvation).
MAGA is a cult.
Have you seen these signs (of cult indoctrination) in your own communities or families?

My family is/was a cult. I know that because I read Danielle M. Young's harrowing memoir, Uncultured. I'm also listening to her pocast The Culting of America. She and her partner on the show Scot Lloyd (a former Pentacostal Church cult member) have a list of ten signs it's a cult. Its been quite an education. Honest and straight-forward.
Spot on.
