They/Them is a versatile pronoun
The other day someone asked about using the pronouns “they/them” for a single person, because to them “they/them” feels like a plural pronoun.
Because I truly believe the person was asking because they want to be a better ally, here’s what I shared:
“It’s possible someone who uses they/them is Plural - many Plural people use they/them to describe themselves as a collective… but for singlets they/them is about admitting that you don’t know the person’s gender or not using a gender.
For example “the doctor called” - if you don’t know the doctor’s gender you may say something like “oh, really? What did they say?”
In reality the singular “they” has been around for many years. I’ve liked using it since I found out it was an option in elementary school. . . When I learned I was Nonbinary, I finally understood why.
Hope this helps. 💕
