Every now and then I get the comment:
“I usually agree with you but don’t this time.”
I have always felt funny when people would say this, but struggled to articulate why.
Recently, I’ve come to understand why this phrase never sat well with me…
Because I don’t expect people to agree with me on evrything…
In my mind, it is actually good when please don’t agree on EVERYTHING.
We should NOT agree on everything… we should all have our own ideas and opinions.
I don’t want people to agree with me on everything….
That’s cult like behavior.
Personally, I find “yes people” intolerable to be around (because they trigger my suspicions of their true intentions, leaving me in a state of hyper vigilance).
I don’t ever expect people to agree with me on everything… and if they do… it’s a red flag I must investigate further (because in my past people who did this ofen had unspoken ulterior motives).
It makes me suspicious. 🤨
I don’t even agree with everything I have ever written/shared (because I am not the same person I was when I started this blog over 8 years ago).
There are definitely things I look back on with what I know today and it’s hard not to cringe… but then I remind myself that “past me” was doing the best they could with the information (and limited coping skills) available at the time.
When we learn and grow our opinions (hopefully) grow too.
I hope I never stop learning and growing.
That said there are some things I do expect people around me to believe (basic stuff like being kind and not being bigoted against marginalized peoples)….
But I don’t think that’s unreasonable.
Thanks for stopping by!
