If you genuinely believe you're working "on the side of good" and "the other side is evil," it makes it easier to do atrocious things to those on "the other side."
I live with parents for economic reasons. I can't even come out of the closet there because they are Catholicized and Filipino and Catholic Filipinos see queer folks, or "bakla" as they call them, as freaks. Coming out could have dire consequences for myself.
But if Prickject 2025 comes to pass I probably will not be able to be out of the closet even if I do manage to move out.
